Treating Erectile Dysfunction

It`s a common men`s health issue and it`s just as common for men to avoid talking about it. Over 25 million Americans may be experiencing erectile dysfunction. But fewer than half are half are getting treatment for it. Many people used to think that as men aged, certain things just stopped working. But health experts say that`s not the case.

"If guys are taking care of themselves, there`s no reason why they shouldn`t be able to have quality erections," says Brad Stork, Family Practice Physician at Mid Dakota Clinic in Bismarck.

With drugs like Viagra and Levitra on the market, more men are talking about erectile dysfunction. Stork is actually giving a talk on the subject next Thursday.

"To get over the embarrassment," he says. "I really stress that."

Erectile dysfunction is most common in men over 40, but can affect men of all ages, especially men who smoke or are overweight.

"Anything that affects the arteries, generally puts men at a higher risk," says Stork.

It could also be psychological or a side effect to another prescription. Fortunately there is hope. In most cases men can fix the problem with lifestyle changes and prescription drugs. In advanced cases, doctors can insert a prosthetic device. You and your doctor can decide what`s best, but for the most part men and their partners can regain a sexually satisfying relationship.
